The Second International Symposium on Neonatology was held in Porto Alegre from 8-10 April. The main focus was the "Update of general topics in neonatology.” Topics such as controversies in neonatal resuscitation, treatment of pulmonary hypertension, newborn intelligence, new paradigms in NICU, neonatal research networks and individual care of premature infants and their families were debated during the event, which was organized by the Division of Neonatology/São Lucas Hospital/PUC-RS.
During the opening ceremony, images of the PUC neonatal unit were presented, highlighting the recently executed hospital refurbishment, including equipment provided mostly by FANEM. The event was attended by about 500 neonatologists from different states, several neighboring countries and other Portuguese-speaking countries, and as well as 60 nurses and physiotherapists. During his presentation, Jeffrey Maisels (Oakland University, USA) mentioned FANEM twice: portraying the company s contribution in the development of phototherapy equipment and on the next slide, when the speaker used an image from a Bilitron apparatus to illustrate his presentation about jaundice in newborn infants.
“The comprehension of FANEM regarding the needs identified and highlighted by the program, speakers and participants of the event was incredible”, said Ms. Evanisa Maria Arone, Neonatology Equipment Consultant at FANEM.
The FANEM Satellite Symposium, an integral part of the event, was presented by a representative of the event committee. “I consider it a privilege, because, in my experience, an Event Organizing Committee has never been so attentive”, said Ms. Evanisa Maria Arone. Three doctors( Ms. Vera Krebs, Ms. Edna and Ms. Titina) talked about several different topics and Fanem equipment was the constant focus of presentations. One prominent aspect was the partnership between the University and Industry to develop protocols and contribute with information required by academic circles.
